Career pivoting doesn't mean starting over. It means strategically repositioning your existing skills, experience, and achievements for a new direction.
Here's the 6-step framework I use with every career transition client:
**Step 1: Get clear on your 'why'**
Is it the industry, the role, the culture, or the compensation? Clarity on what you're running towards (not just away from) is critical.
**Step 2: Do a skills audit**
Most of your skills transfer. Create three lists: (1) skills you love using, (2) skills you have but don't enjoy, (3) skills you want to develop.
**Step 3: Identify your target**
Research 3–5 specific roles in your target industry. What do they require? Where do your skills align? Where are the gaps?
**Step 4: Bridge the gap**
Fill skills gaps through online courses, volunteer work, freelance projects, or side projects. You don't need to be 100% ready — just credible.
**Step 5: Rebuild your story**
Update your resume, LinkedIn, and pitch to tell a compelling transition story. Focus on transferable value, not what you're leaving behind.
**Step 6: Activate your network**
Most pivot opportunities come through people. Reach out to people already doing what you want to do. Ask for informational interviews.
Success is possible. I've helped dozens of professionals make these moves. You're next.
